Dave's American Dream
(Note: Unlike most of the work on this site, except some portraits that are obviously set up, these are not purely documentary images but a blend of the real and the hyper-real. Some images are unstaged and others are staged since this is a personal art project and not for publication in a journalistic outlet.)
This is my friend Dave. We’ve known one another since junior high school. We were both skateboarders. My mother and I had opened up a skateboard shop during my 8th grade year of junior high school and it was sometime around then that I met Dave.
I’d just picked up a camera too around that time and began to photograph my friends Dave was one of my closest friends at the time. Little did I know then I would photograph Dave off and on for the next 15 years. The first images are from high school and when we were in our early 20s. In the final photos now we’re both in our early 30s.
In these photos and with my text I want to tell the story of not only Dave but our generation they called X. I suppose we’re supposed to be lazy being part of the so called Gen X … whatever that is. It is a label made up for us by someone else.
